What It Is

What Aprehend® Is and Why It Changed Bed Bug Work

Aprehend® is an EPA-registered biopesticide built around Beauveria bassiana, a naturally occurring fungus that has been used in agriculture for decades and was adapted specifically for bed bug control. It is applied as a fine oil-based spray along harborage edges, cracks, and transit routes. When a bed bug walks across the dried residue, the fungal spores attach to its cuticle, penetrate its body, and grow from the inside out over three to seven days. Because the bugs groom and contact each other, spores transfer colony-wide, killing adults and nymphs, including newly hatched nymphs that cross the treated band.

ProTech adopted Aprehend® as our flagship bed bug protocol because it solves the biggest disruption in commercial bed bug work — the multi-day shutdown. Heat and fumigation can force rooms out of service for days; hotels lose revenue, residents can't easily relocate, and tenants resist displacement. Aprehend® avoids that: occupants leave only for the treatment window plus about four hours, then return. Our licensed, professionally trained applicators apply the product in strategic bands that create a three-month kill barrier, then return for a verification visit at ninety days. It is the treatment method we recommend whenever the facility cannot afford downtime. Aprehend® also works proactively: in high-turnover environments like hotels, senior living, and multifamily, we can apply it as a preventive barrier on and around beds, frames, and luggage racks so bed bugs introduced by a guest or new resident are killed before an infestation can establish.

In Their Words
Aprehend® is the reason we switched our entire pest program to ProTech. Before, every bed bug report meant moving a resident for three days, deep cleaning, and a lot of family phone calls. Now the treatment happens in the apartment, the resident stays home, and we have a ninety-day barrier if it comes back. Our families notice the difference and our nursing staff is not pulled off-floor to manage relocations.

How It Works

Our 4-step commercial process.

Structured, documented, and built around the compliance standards your facility faces.

01

Confirmation Inspection

A trained applicator verifies live activity, maps harborage zones, and confirms Aprehend® is the right fit — some extreme infestations are better served by heat first, then Aprehend® as the barrier.

02

Strategic Application

Aprehend® is applied in deliberate bands along bed frames, furniture edges, baseboards, and transit routes. The goal is a barrier bed bugs must cross, not a blanket spray.

03

Low Disruption

Once the application dries, the room is released back to the occupant or returned to inventory. Occupants return, with no cleanup required.

04

90-Day Verification

We return around day ninety to inspect and reapply if the room sits in a high-risk rotation. The ninety-day barrier is the core of the value.

What's Included

Every program delivers this baseline.

Specialty services and add-ons layer on based on facility type. This is the foundation.

Certified Applicator

Technicians trained and certified under the Aprehend® applicator program — the product is not sold to uncertified providers.

No Evacuation

Occupants step out only during treatment and for about four hours while the residue dries, then return, eliminating relocation costs and conflicts.

Kills Adults & Nymphs

Adults and nymphs die on contact as they cross the treated band with the dried residue over the three to seven day timeline.

Transfer Kill

Bed bugs carry spores back to harborage and infect nestmates through grooming and contact, extending kill deep into voids.

90-Day Residual

Applied barrier stays active for approximately ninety days, protecting against reintroduction events during high-risk windows.

Biopesticide Safety

Fungal active ingredient with a favorable safety profile for occupants, pets, and sensitive indoor air environments.

Strategic Banding

Applied in targeted bands along known transit routes, not as a room-wide blanket spray — efficient and precise.

Documentation Packet

Complete records including applicator certification, product SDS, treated rooms, and verification schedule.

Follow-Up Verification

Day-ninety return visit confirms no breakthrough activity and refreshes the barrier if the room is high-turnover.

Frequently Asked

Aprehend® Bed Bug Treatment — common questions.

How is Aprehend® different from conventional chemical treatment?+
Conventional treatments use synthetic pyrethroids, neonicotinoids, or insect growth regulators that kill on contact and break down within days. Aprehend® is a biopesticide — a live fungal spore suspension that stays viable on surfaces for about ninety days. Instead of an instant knockdown, it works through cuticle penetration over three to seven days. The tradeoff is no multi-day evacuation, minimal prep, and a true residual barrier that conventional chemistry simply cannot match.
Is Aprehend® safe with residents, pets, and hospital air-quality standards?+
Aprehend® is EPA-registered and built around Beauveria bassiana, a naturally occurring fungus that targets insect cuticles specifically and does not affect mammals. It is approved for application in occupied rooms, assisted living apartments, and healthcare settings. Once dried, the residue is odorless and inert to building occupants. We still follow label reentry guidance and document every application, but the product is specifically designed for environments where conventional insecticides create compliance or occupant-comfort problems.
How long before the bed bugs actually die after application?+
Individual bed bugs that contact the dried residue begin dying between three and seven days after contact. Because the fungus works from the inside out, there is no visible twitching or instant knockdown — the bugs simply stop reproducing and die quietly. Colony-wide elimination usually occurs within two to three weeks as grooming and contact spread the spores through harborage. Bed bug activity typically drops to zero within that window and stays at zero throughout the ninety-day barrier.
Do occupants need to leave during treatment?+
Occupants do step out for the treatment itself and for about four hours afterward while the residue dries — then they return. There is no multi-day evacuation like heat treatment, no laundering, and no furniture removal. Low disruption is the single biggest operational reason facilities switch to Aprehend®.
When would you NOT recommend Aprehend®?+
Two scenarios. First, an extremely heavy, long-standing infestation with thousands of visible bugs benefits from a heat pass first to knock down the population, then Aprehend® as the long-term barrier. Second, a facility that needs same-hour clearance documentation may be better served by conventional chemistry with a faster label reentry. We walk through both options during the inspection and recommend whichever fits the operational reality.
What does the 90-day barrier actually protect against?+
The barrier is the core of Aprehend® value. For ninety days after application, any bed bug introduced into the room from a guest bag, a new tenant, a hospital transfer, or an adjacent unit will contact the residue and die within a week. In high-introduction-risk facilities like hotels, shelters, and healthcare, this means a bug walked in on Monday is dead by Friday without a new service call. Facilities on a maintenance rotation essentially run a rolling ninety-day shield.
Can Aprehend® be combined with other treatment methods?+
Absolutely, and we often recommend combinations. A common protocol is a heat pass to eliminate the visible population, followed immediately by an Aprehend® application to establish the ninety-day barrier. Another combination pairs mattress and box-spring encasements with Aprehend® along bed frames and baseboards. Aprehend® plays well with heat, steam, and encasements — what it does not mix well with is blanket conventional spraying.
