Commercial Bird Exclusion
What It Is

What Commercial Bird Control Really Means

Commercial bird control is structural exclusion work, not spraying. Pigeons, starlings, and sparrows cause damage in three ways: droppings that corrode surfaces and trigger health code violations, nesting material that clogs drains and creates fire hazards in rooftop equipment, and slip-and-fall liability on walkways and loading areas. ProTech addresses each of those through physical exclusion — netting, spikes, wire tension systems, and entry point sealing — combined with professional droppings cleanup that meets health-department and OSHA expectations. Spray solutions or scare devices rarely hold up long term on commercial buildings, which is why we lead with exclusion.

Every Indianapolis bird job starts with a site assessment. We identify the species, map roosting and loafing zones, document damage and sanitation issues, and design a site-specific exclusion layout. For warehouses and distribution centers that means rafter netting and dock-door solutions. For retail storefronts and hotels that means ledge-level spikes and signage protection. For parking garages that means large-scale netting across open decks. Our technicians install the system in-house, clean the affected areas safely, and optionally return for maintenance checks to keep the exclusion tight as birds test it.

Who It's For

Indianapolis Buildings We Protect From Birds

Commercial buildings where bird activity creates sanitation, compliance, and liability exposure.

In Their Words
We had pigeons nesting in the dock-door rafters and inspectors were starting to take notes. ProTech assessed the site, netted the rafters over a weekend, sealed the entry points, and handled the cleanup to health-code standards. We have not had a bird issue in that warehouse since, and they come back quarterly to check the netting seams.

How It Works

Our 4-step commercial process.

Structured, documented, and built around the compliance standards your facility faces.

01

Site Assessment

We walk the full exterior, identify the species, map roosting and loafing zones, and document droppings accumulation and structural damage.

02

Exclusion Design

We design a site-specific plan — netting, spikes, wires, sealing — matched to the species pressure, building type, and your compliance requirements.

03

Installation & Cleanup

In-house ProTech technicians install the exclusion and perform health-code-grade droppings cleanup with PPE and containment protocols.

04

Maintenance Checks

For ongoing programs, we return quarterly to check seams, tension, and new pressure points, and adjust before birds find a way back in.

How We Compare

ProTech vs. typical national pest control.

Most buyers hire a national chain because the brand is familiar — then deal with rotating technicians, sub-contractors, and call centers. Here's how ProTech is structurally different.

Frequently Asked

Commercial Bird Control — common questions.

Why exclusion instead of trapping or deterrents?+
Pigeons, starlings, and sparrows are highly site-loyal — they come back to the same building, same ledge, same rafter. Trapping removes individual birds but new birds fill the empty territory within weeks. Scare devices and repellents work short-term until the birds habituate. Physical exclusion — netting the rafters, spiking the ledges, sealing the entry points — removes the ability to land and nest, which is the only long-term fix on commercial buildings.
Do bird droppings really cause health code issues?+
Yes. Pigeon and starling droppings can carry histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and salmonella, which is why the FDA, USDA, and most local health departments flag droppings accumulation as a sanitation violation for food-related businesses. OSHA also treats heavy accumulation as a respiratory and slip hazard for workers. We clean to documented protocols with PPE and containment so your inspection file shows proper remediation, not just a hose-down.
How long does exclusion last?+
Properly installed netting typically holds up for 8-12 years in exterior commercial applications, and stainless steel spike systems often last 15-20 years. The failure points are almost always seams, tension anchors, or new construction that creates a workaround. That is why the Exclusion + Maintenance Program exists — quarterly checks catch loose seams and new pressure points before birds exploit them and you need to re-do entire sections.
Can you work around our operations?+
Yes. Warehouse and distribution installs are typically scheduled on off-shifts or weekends to keep dock traffic moving. Retail and hotel work is scheduled around guest hours — often before open or after close. For food processing plants, we coordinate with your sanitation and QA leads to meet plant-entry protocols. Every install timeline is built around your operation, not the other way around.
What about protected bird species?+
The three species we treat — feral pigeons, European starlings, and house sparrows — are not protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so exclusion, deterrents, and removal are all allowed. Native species like swallows and killdeer are protected and require different approaches, usually timing-based exclusion outside nesting season. If we identify protected species during the assessment, we will tell you exactly what is and is not legal before designing the plan.
Do you handle the cleanup too?+
Yes. Droppings cleanup is part of our standard bird work. We use PPE, HEPA containment, and approved disinfectants, and we document before and after photos for your records. For heavy accumulation in enclosed spaces like attics or mechanical rooms, we follow the same respiratory and containment protocols that industrial hygiene firms use. That documentation matters if you are responding to an OSHA or health-department finding.
How fast can you start?+
Assessments are typically scheduled within the same week for commercial accounts. Installation timing depends on material lead times and site complexity — small spike jobs on storefronts can often be installed within 1-2 weeks, while large warehouse netting projects usually run 3-6 weeks from proposal sign-off. For urgent health-code or inspection-driven work, we will flag it and sequence the proposal and install as fast as material lead times allow.
