What It Is

Stored Product Pests Are a QA Problem, Not a Pest Problem

Stored product insects — Indian meal moths, sawtoothed grain beetles, cigarette beetles, confused flour beetles, rice weevils — are the pests that hide inside product, move through a facility in ingredients, and fail third-party audits. For Indianapolis food processors, bakeries, grocery DCs, and warehouses, a failed AIB, SQF, or BRC audit is not just a pest issue — it costs accounts, triggers customer complaints, and can shut down a production line. ProTech treats SPI work as a QA function first and a pest function second, with pheromone monitoring, sanitation auditing, and source elimination that generates the documentation your quality team actually needs in front of an auditor.

Our programs start with a full facility walkthrough — receiving, bulk storage, production, packaging, finished goods, and returns. We deploy a pheromone trap grid matched to the species mix in your products, establish baseline counts, and build a weekly or monthly monitoring rotation depending on throughput and risk. When counts move, we trace them back to the actual source — a forgotten bag of flour on a top rack, a cracked ingredient bin, a returned product pallet — and eliminate the source rather than just spraying the symptom. That source-first approach is what separates audit-grade SPI work from general pest control applied to a food facility.

In Their Words
We were trending toward a rough AIB inspection with Indian meal moth activity in two production zones. ProTech came in, set a pheromone grid, found the source in a supplier ingredient pallet we had just received, and helped us build the corrective-action documentation. We scored Superior on the next audit. They have been our SPI program for three years and the reports land directly in our QA file.

How It Works

Our 4-step commercial process.

Structured, documented, and built around the compliance standards your facility faces.

01

Facility Audit

We walk receiving, storage, production, packaging, and returns with your QA lead to map the risk profile and species likely to drive pressure.

02

Pheromone Grid

We install a trap grid matched to your product mix — meal moth, grain beetle, cigarette beetle, flour beetle — and establish baseline counts.

03

Monitoring & Source Tracing

On every recurring visit we read traps, audit sanitation, and trace any count movement back to the actual source instead of just spraying the symptom.

04

Audit-Prep Docs

Trend reports, corrective actions, and sanitation findings land in your QA file in the format AIB, SQF, and BRC auditors expect to see.

How We Compare

ProTech vs. typical national pest control.

Most buyers hire a national chain because the brand is familiar — then deal with rotating technicians, sub-contractors, and call centers. Here's how ProTech is structurally different.

Frequently Asked

Stored Product Pest Control — common questions.

Why pheromone traps instead of just treating?+
Pheromone traps are a monitoring tool, not a control tool. They tell you which species is present, where in the facility the pressure is building, and whether trend counts are rising or falling week to week. That data is what drives the rest of the program — sanitation focus areas, source tracing, and any treatment decisions. Treating a facility without pheromone data is guessing, and auditors can tell. They expect to see trend data, not just spray logs.
What does AIB-grade actually mean?+
AIB International uses a detailed pest-management scoring rubric — trap placement, trap reading frequency, trend documentation, source-tracing records, corrective actions, sanitation integration. AIB-grade means we run the program to that rubric by default, so when the auditor shows up your pest management section is already documented the way they want to see it. The same structure holds up under SQF and BRC audits because their pest requirements are built on similar fundamentals.
How often do you service a food facility?+
It depends on throughput and risk. High-volume production plants and DCs are typically weekly. Mid-volume bakeries and manufacturers are often every two weeks. Lower-risk dry-goods warehouses may run monthly. We recommend the frequency that matches your actual pest pressure and audit standard — not a default number. If you are running SQF or BRC at a high certification level, weekly is usually the right answer regardless of how clean the facility looks.
What happens if you find a source in a supplier ingredient?+
This is one of the most common real-world SPI findings. When pheromone counts spike in a specific zone and we trace it to a just-received ingredient pallet, we document the lot, photograph the evidence, and support your QA team in pulling the corrective action and supplier complaint together. That documentation protects you in two directions — with the auditor and with the supplier if you need to negotiate credit or change sourcing.
Do you treat around active food production?+
Yes, and we do it with extreme care. All product selection, timing, and application methods are matched to food-contact restrictions and your facility's sanitation protocols. For active production zones, we lean heavily on non-chemical methods — source elimination, sanitation, temperature, and mechanical exclusion — and apply treatments only during down cycles with full coordination with your QA lead. Our technicians are in-house ProTech employees trained specifically for food-facility environments.
Can you support us during an actual audit?+
Yes. Audit-week on-site support is included in our AIB-Grade and Multi-Facility programs. That means a technician walks the facility with you before the auditor arrives, your pest management documentation is pre-assembled in the format the auditor expects, and we are reachable during the audit if the auditor has questions about trend data, trap placement rationale, or corrective actions. That support is usually the difference between a smooth audit and a scramble.
What about restaurants with dry storage issues?+
Restaurants are not the core of our SPI work, but we do handle meal moth and grain beetle issues in restaurant dry storage when they show up — especially for high-volume kitchens and catering operations with bulk flour, grain, rice, and dried fruit. For a one-off issue we run Audit + Treatment; for chains and larger operations with recurring dry-storage risk we build a lighter recurring program. The same source-tracing approach applies — find the infested ingredient first, then fix the storage practices that let it establish.
